“Since 1994, 15 million people have had to flee to a new country,” says Martin Ford of the Maryland Office for Refugees and Asylees. At least 1,000 refugees come to Baltimore each year.
Once a year, the whole town gets together to party and celebrate! Dance from Sudan and Nepal, Guinea, Congo and Burma!
Sing from Sudan, Eritra, Kurdistan, and from Syria, you come too! We are all here, immigrants and refugees. Here we all are, dancing for refugees.
SUPER DUPER SHOUT OUT to EVERYONE who helped make BALTIMORE’S WORLD REFUGEE DAY CELEBRATION #AMAZING!
Children and adult refugees from all over the world performed for an audience of new refugees, old and new immigrants, Baltimoreans and guests in celebration of Baltimore World Refugee Day, declared by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. Baltimore World Refugee Day is on June 20 (which is also my birthday!)
LORD! I DANCED MY SOUL OUT!!THE TALENT WAS INCREDIBLE. Performers represented cultures from around the world.
One of my favorites was Pivot Zotamou, a Guinean youth, who rapped. I thought his lyrics were going to be about the pains of war, death and survival but in fact his poetic verses told the story of a teenage boy’s feelings about GIRLS!
#GoFigure. We’re all the same!
You can help these and yet-to-come survivors feel welcomed in your community by volunteering through International Rescue Committee (IRC) and giving them a ride from the airport, hanging out with them, or just saying, “what’s up.” The IRC serves the refugee population in 22 U.S. cities.
