Avoiding The Hole: How Not To Repeat Past Mistakes

bigstock_Road_To_Success_Green_Road_Sig_5032570I haven’t had it as bad as the mother from Langston Hughes’ poem, “Mother to Son.” But surely I can relate to the line, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”

But, while some of us are winning the battle against the general atmosphere of hard times, others seem to be losing it. When I asked a trusted mentor how to cope with my own reaccuring frustrations, she handed me this poem.

Old habits are hard to break but we must learn to recognize unproductive patterns in all aspects of our lives. In what area of life are you frustrated? Maybe an evalutation of your own decisions could help you stop falling in the same ole holes.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS
By Portia Nelson

I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalkdanger-falling-sign-Medium-1024x928
I fall in
I am lost….I am helpless
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

II
I walk down the same street,
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street
There is a hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in…it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a hole in the sidewalk
I walk around it.

V
I walk down another street.
