Living Awake

Mother, wife, sister, friend, writer / blogger / creative organizer, budding photographer... These are just a few of the many hats I juggle each day. I believe creativity is oxygen for the soul. I created Live In Color blog to celebrate the beauty in every moment, from faith to inspiration and motherhood. And it is soon becoming Pray with Our Feet blog which will focus on the intersection of faith and activism. There is much to be said for living in the present moment, unbound by the past, unencumbered by a vision for the future, in other words, living awake. Many great teachers encourage us to embrace this way of seeing the world, inhabiting it fully.

For a few years now, I’ve struggled on this path. Yet the longer I read certain texts and practice yoga, or sometimes simply sit quietly, my understanding evolves. I am beginning to understand that perhaps it’s not some monolithic break through or rapid change in perception, but rather a series of small changes, such as sipping your tea so that the warmness permeates your throat, coating it ever so gently, or connecting deeply with the laughter of a friend. This is awakening to the beauty and complexity of life, one moment at a time.

Most of us are often so busy that reflection seems impossible, yet each individual can spare one moment to absorb what is considered mundane, reflecting with wonder, as children and animals often do. Slowly, you will begin to realize that your mind and body are awakening, and the  journey is only beginning. This, beloved, is the greatest gift of all.
