Mother, wife, sister, friend, writer / blogger / creative organizer, budding photographer... These are just a few of the many hats I juggle each day. I believe creativity is oxygen for the soul. I created Live In Color blog to celebrate the beauty in every moment, from faith to inspiration and motherhood. And it is soon becoming Pray with Our Feet blog which will focus on the intersection of faith and activism. I am addicted to inspiration. Admitting is the first step, huh? One of my favorite blogs, Rowdy Kittens, which honors the beauty of living small with gratitude and grace, regularly posts links to other great content around the web from articles to podcasts.

Recently, while brainstorming in the shower (isn’t it the best place for ideas), I thought, why not add to the effort? The world always needs more motivation and positive energy, right? So, visit Live In Color each Monday, and connect with content which feeds your soul. I cannot think of a better way to begin the week.

liebster-award

We’re on cloud 9, dancing in stilettos and timberland boots, y’all! Why you ask – especially on a chilly Monday? Well, Live In Color blog was nominated for the Liebster Award by a cool blog we follow, Monday Morning Motivation (part of I am Worth The Effort Initiative) which features posts about relationships, faith and bringing awareness to human trafficking.  Thank you so much for nominating us, L. Dwain Boswell!

Okay, I know, your next question is so what the heck is the Liebster Award? Bloggers nominate other bloggers (many of which are new to the blogosphere); it encourages us to keep pounding away on that keyboard (or in my case iPhone) and creating content.

So, here are the rules of the award, according to our fellow blogger L. Dwain Boswell at Monday Morning Motivation (part of I am Worth The Effort Initiative):

1. Post acceptance post and include a thank you to the blogger who nominated you.

2. Choose at least 10 bloggers you wish to nominate with links to their blogs.

3. Answer 10 questions your nominator sent to you.

4. Include 10 questions for your nominees  to answer.

Questions for us, and our answers:

1.  Why did you  start blogging? We wanted to inspire, empower and encourage other women to live life fully and in color. We also love sharing our stories, along with posts about style, inspiration and culture.

2. What is your best blogging tip?  Write only about what you love, what moves you immensely.

3.  What is your favorite time of the year? Summer!

4.  What is your favorite movie and why? Hmm… This is tough question!! I would say the deeply moving film by Mira Nair, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love; it introduces us to a woman who defines herself for herself in a time and place (India) when this was nearly impossible.

5.  Your earliest memory goes back to what age? Wow. I would say the age of 4.

6.  If you had to teach something what would you teach? Probably a hybrid arts course of style, literature and contemporary independent film.

7.  Would you rather have more time or money? Definitely money, it helps to provide so much autonomy.

8.  What makes you smile? Oh so much! Beauty and love (my husband and baby daughter, my family), faith in God, stilettos, cupcakes, Sex and the City (movie, every season), poetry, martinis, Kate Spade purses, great conversations with friends, discovering new music from artists like Ayo and Cody ChestnuTT. I could go on and on.

9. If you were not scared, what would you do? Move to Bali.

10. What do you do for fun? Dance in stilettos, visit art galleries and museums, read vicariously (fashion magazines, books, blogs and articles), watch great indie films like The Sapphires, write poetry, travel, yoga / meditate and hang with friends.

Here are the blogs we nominated:

Mind of Malaka

A Creative Reality

Ruffles Ribbons N’ Bows

Olivia A. Cole

The Happsters

Mental Fitness

Monday Morning Motivation (I am Worth the Effort)

Woman, Live!

The Better Man Projects

Questions for our nominees to answer:

1. What inspires your blog posts / content?

2. What do you enjoy most about blogging?

3. Were you surprised we nominated your blog?

4. Name one thing that is on your bucket list.

5. What’s your favorite art form – music, fashion, film, literature, etc.? Why?

6. What dreams keep you up at night? Are you pursuing them?

7. What country would you like to visit and why?

8.  Is there anything, or anyone you cannot live without? Why?

9. How do you begin your day?

10. What does the phrase “live in color” mean to you?

Valencia (or V as I say), hair stylist and diva for days, is an energetic and loving mother of six beautiful children committed to success. V speaks her truth without apology or a second blink. She’s a pull yourself up by your stilettos kinda lady. Period.

Shannon (or Shan as I call her) never met a pair of cowboy boots or timberlands she didn’t like; she writes and sings freedom music. Big ideas keep her up at night, and she relentlessly pursues them. Oh, and Shan has some famous big cousins, too. Have you seen Braxton Family Values?

My roots are spilt between Honduras, the South, and East Baltimore. They call me a workaholic and activist (my husband Kes says I want to save the world), but I am simply committed to the passion of purpose. Heart warrior, poet, standing tall in heels any day of the week (doesn’t every good fashionista?); faith and family nurture my soul.

3 women, 3 different lives, with 1 Cause. What’s that? Living life in color and on purpose, while inspiring and empowering you to do the same.

Well, last Sunday, despite frigid chilly November air and relentless winds, we tucked away our insecurities and fatigue. We headed to Baltimore’s Herring Run Park for our fall photo shoot, big girl shoes and all, y’all.  Glamour on an otherwise mundane Sunday afternoon. Check!

Shan and I spent the weekend obsessing about our hair, makeup, and clothes; as we drove over together in the car, we anxiously checked the mirror. Was every hair in place? Eye shadow defined?

Yet in the end, it all comes down to collaboration, those moments of magic when everything coalesces without effort or pretense. Keston (Keystone Productions) my husband and creative partner, shot these photos in under thirty minutes, while our children played, even throwing the leaves you see in these photographs.  This is part of what it means to live in color! You embrace the flow, and let go.

American media deceives us, convinces women jealousy and bickering are second nature. “Reality shows” portray us at one another’s throats for entertainment – particularly women of color. Over and over again, the message repeats: “Women don’t get along.”

Well, ultimately, it’s up to us to shut out the noise. Refuse the boxes; their narrow definitions of femininity. We can and do get along, every day. Collaboration is beautiful and liberating! Valencia, Shannon and I dwell in possibility, as poet Emily Dickinson once wrote. Three women, three different lives, with one cause – living fully and color! Come along with us on this journey; you will soar.
