God speaks to me through music, nature and people most. How about you?

Well, the other day, a friend insisted I listen to this song, Endless Alleluia by musician Cory Asbury. I guess I could spare a moment, I thought, mentally mapping out the next hour of stuff to do.

I gave Nai her little book, and hit play. Surprisingly it was one of those lyric videos – spare, raw, all voice and poetic words. Each syllable broke through the mundaneness of a Tuesday afternoon, baptizing my spirit in surrender to the omnipresent power of God. As the tears slowly spiraled down my cheeks, I settled into these lines because I live them:

In the moments where you go unnoticed in the ordinary day to day

Countless miracles of life around us point like arrows to your name…”

When you believe for a miracle and breakthrough for your family, you learn to notice what others carelessly discard as ordinary. You see God etched into the fabric of your existence, mending brokenness, building bridges as you traverse difficulties. Your struggles become wings, propelling you with unrelenting faith:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:7

I believe God reveals bible verses when we are ready to receive them. I heard snatches of James 1:7 but when I began to read Chris Gore and Angela Locke’s most recent book, The Perfect Gift: Seeing the Child, Not the Condition, about believing God for healing for your child while seeing their beauty and uniqueness, it took on a more profound meaning.

God creates beauty, it’s us who ruin it’s many manifestations due to ego, short sightedness, and a stubborn refusal to see with our hearts. Let us pray for a revelation of the miraculous in ordinary moments, and God will begin using even the smallest signs to cultivate steady belief in our spirits.

How can you be more intentional about opening your eyes to miracles?

Prayer: Dear God – When I feel discouraged, overwhelmed or buried in the mundane tasks of life, open my eyes to the miracles around me. Help me celebrate musicality in a child’s laugh, the warmth of connecting with a family member, friend or person I am meeting for the first time. Remind me not to overlook expansive skies, balmy winds, awakening to sunrises and closing the days gazing upon auburn colored sunsets. In your precious name I pray, Amen.

Confession, y’all. I do not yet hear God’s voice audibly. You know how folks gush as they describe talking to our creator like a bestie? Slowly, I am getting there. I know I need to quiet this mind, though, and resist the weight of daily distractions through prayer and quiet reflection.

Too often I allow to-do lists and obligations to encroach on this time. And yet when I force myself into stillness, no cell phone or laptop, that presence consumes this weary heart and biblical promises (Jeremiah 29:11) sooth despair, birthing an unremitting hope.

I prayed to see deer as an indication of our daughter’s healing and God’s presence with us during this season of uncertainty. And now, friends, they appear, randomly – regal, majestic, stunningly beautiful, a visual testament to perseverence.

On a late night drive with Nai, after passing a lone deer standing still at a local farm I decided to Google their biblical significance and discovered these verses:

“Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls—Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.” – Habaakkuk 3: 17-19 (NKJV)

Ah! This is why God laid these stunning creatures on my heart, I thought, an apt reminder to trust in spite of shifting circumstances. His guidance is unwavering, even as our confidence oscillates over time.

Are you, struggling, like me, to hold on to His words in a seemingly impossible battle? “Common sense” urges us to doggedly fight or escape, but God whispers patiently, “Let go so I can begin to work.” Can you hear Him above the noise of doubt? He lifts us above difficulties when we willingly shed pieces of ourselves without shame, standing wrecked at the intersection of what appears chaotic. In the midst of such brokenness and vulnerability, His glory is elevated.

Standing still means there is space for Him to join us, and provide healing, comforting and encouragement. I am tired of running and fighting alone some days. Are you? Let us stand together and allow God to propel us forward in His time.

Prayer: 

Dear Lord,

Teach me to stand on your word. Remind me to carry these promises within the core of my heart, spirit and soul. Focus my eyes not on the circumstances, but you, for nothing is impossible when I look towards heaven. Your word says: “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven (Matthew 18:18). Thank you, God, for deliverance, healing and wholeness, in your name I pray, Amen.

Tell us about more your yoga journey. I understand it helped you to release emotional baggage. How, specifically, did this practice do that for you? 

My introduction to yoga was in a movement acting class about 16 years ago. Yoga was the warm-up which helped us to get out of our heads, and connect to our bodies. At first, I was wondering why in the hell are we doing this, it was uncomfortable and annoying.

Then one day, I was having just a crazy day, and decided I needed to stop resisting what was going with me. So that day, we did the eagle pose (Garudasana), and I started to tear up while in the pose. Since then yoga has become therapy for my life.

Yoga has helped me get through toxic relationships, crazy jobs and body issues. Life has become little easier to navigate when I get on the mat.

We are living in times of tremendous stress from the political environment to police brutality. How can yoga help many folks to cope, particularly folks of color? 

Yoga allows people see the possibility in themselves, which is extremely empowering! You start remove blocks and fears, discover what you can really do. We hold so much in our bodies that is  toxic, and [then] create unhealthy habits to cope with our pain. Yoga help us to work through the scars physically and mentally by connecting to our “tangible” selves.

Especially since the election and police shootings more people are coming to studio to not just relieve stress, but for the support of the community. We have talks to support and try to bring awareness and diversity [into] wellness, [helping folks] to lift their spirits and find their Shanti (peace).

Stacked Yoga’s goal is to bring diversity to the mat, so we can heal and empower folks to become peace warriors. Lawd knows we need it!

I notice Stacked Yoga is not confined to a yoga studio, and you teach classes in diverse locations, such as Martha’s Vineyard. Why did you choose this approach? Do you also give instruction by Skype? 

Even though I live in Brooklyn, Stacked’s first class was in my hometown of Louisville, KY. I travel a lot and originally wanted it to be a mobile studio. Wherever I landed, I taught, because the practice has been such a gift to my life, I wanted to share.

People were so receptive and open when I was traveling. So for me, to keep it a mobile studio made sense at the time. We do not offer classes through Skype even although we are considering videos.

Also, I never planned to have a physical studio in the heart of Brooklyn, but the opportunity to have a studio on Tompkins Ave. has been blessing to Stacked, as we have built a community [full of] flavor and light.

Your studio focuses on 5 principles of yoga – breathe, exercise, diet, mediation and relaxation. How do all of these principles strengthen the practice of yoga? 

These principles are here to guide people to mental, physical and spiritual growth. We try to keep it simple, but that is not always easy. Yoga is just not about getting on the mat, it’s about who you are off the mat, and do you make an conscious effort do these 5 things in your daily life.

Prime example, food is a challenge for many and finding the balance of what agrees with your body is important.

In terms of diet, is there a dietary practice you all follow which you believe is most beneficial – vegan, vegetarian, etc.? 

At Stacked we don’t push any particular diet. I have been from vegan to losing my mind over a weekly dosage of bacon. You have to listen your body, because it will tell you what is for you or what is not.
